Concerns grow on education funding
Wednesday, March 16, 2011
Local education leaders learned a lesson themselves Tuesday night that included some history, a bit of social studies, and some very scary math.
More than 60 people concerned about education funding gathered at Pittsburgh CAPA, Downtown, to hear how they could be affected by the state budget cuts proposed by Gov. Tom Corbett. The session, co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters, was the third of four public meetings held this month on the topic. Another meeting is set for 10 a.m. today at St. John Lutheran Church on Cumberland Road in McCandless.
"We ought to be having this kind of conversation going on in every community almost every night, given the dire circumstances we're confronting," said Ron Cowell, a former state legislator who is president of the Education Policy and Leadership Council in Harrisburg.
