Tell Your Legislators: Stop the Billion Dollar Cut in School Funding! | |
A week ago, we told you we feared that Governor Corbett’s budget would propose serious education funding cuts. The budget proposal announced Tuesday is even worse than anything we could have expected. The Governor has asked the General Assembly to balance the budget on the backs of our children by reducing funding for K-12 education by over a billion dollars. Contact your local legislators and tell them to stop the billion dollar cut in school funding. The Governor’s proposal would reduce the primary budget item supporting public schools by $550 million, or 9.5 percent. Along with local property taxes, this is the major source of funding for the entire educational program of Pennsylvania school districts. In addition, the proposal would completely eliminate the $259 million that has supported full-day kindergarten and class size reduction for thousands of students, as well as many pre-K programs. It would completely eliminate the $48 million that has provided tutoring programs for struggling students. It would completely eliminate state funding for science programs. It would completely eliminate state funding of college courses for high school students and other efforts to reform high school education. Pennsylvania’s investments in these programs have contributed significantly to increased academic success of our students in recent years. The children who will suffer most from this proposal cannot vote and do not have a political voice of their own. They need your support and advocacy on their behalf more than ever before. Their very futures are at stake. You can start by contacting your local legislators and telling them to stop the billion dollar cut in school funding. What I don't get is that funding school always get the cut from the Fed but the government keep bailing out financial institutions with loads of money. There is simply no logic in the equation!
