Pa. Joins States Facing a School Cheating Scandal

New York Times By MICHAEL WINERIP, Published: July 31, 2011
"Never before have so many had so much reason to cheat."
"Mr. Tomalis, the education secretary, says Gov. Tom Corbett "has been adamant about making sure that we make every effort" to respond "aggressively on these issues."
The governor will be tested. Chester Community Charter School, which was heavily flagged in the 2009 study for "aberrant" erasures and test scores, is operated by Vahan Gureghian. Mr. Gureghian was the largest individual contributor to the governor's election campaign last fall, giving more than $300,000.
In April the governor visited Mr. Gureghian's charter, praising it as a model "that needs to be reported to all the people of Pennsylvania," which of course is exactly what Mr. Herold did in his July 21 posting for The Notebook."

Changes sought in charter school approval process

Bucks County Courier Times Posted: Sunday, July 31, 2011 5:00 am
By James McGinnis, Staff writer
Once considered an experimental alternative to the status quo, Pennsylvania's charter schools now educate more than 90,000 students and a new law could allow them to open without a single public hearing at the local level.

When did public education become public enemy No. 1?

Patriot-News Op-Ed By Michael H. Zang
The notion that all citizens are entitled to an education is deeply rooted in the history of this country. Horace Mann espoused this concept while serving as the secretary of education for the commonwealth of Massachusetts beginning in 1837.

Retired school officials graduate to state jobs

The experience of midstate school superintendents isn't shelved when they leave their school district jobs.  Central Pennsylvania is well represented in the state Department of Education, with Gov. Tom Corbett's administration tapping a number of former superintendents to fill leadership posts.
Amy Morton, former Capital Area Intermediate Unit executive director, is now deputy secretary to new state education secretary Ronald Tomalis.
Carolyn Dumaresq, former executive director of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and superintendent of Central Dauphin School District, is deputy for K-12 education.
David Volkman, former superintendent of Susquehanna Twp. School District, is an executive assistant for K-12 education.
Timothy Eller, president of Susquenita School Board, is the department's communications director.
And a former IU executive and teacher from Allegheny County — Barbara Minzenberg — is leading the office of child development and early learning.
