Do poorest Pa. schools have to take bigger cuts?

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) -- When Gov. Tom Corbett chose to cut Pennsylvania's way out of a projected multibillion-dollar budget deficit, he started by taking a disproportionate chunk of state aid away from the state's poorest school districts.
Why not approach it by taking a disproportionate amount of state aid away from the districts that can best afford it - the wealthiest?
"That's a great question," said Jim Buckheit of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -– The fight over school vouchers in Pennsylvania is a test of whether the Tea Party can transition from a protest movement into sustained political activism. They might yet make the grade, but they're hitting plenty of bumps along the way.
Despite the problems mobilizing support for the voucher bill, Commonwealth's Benefield said it's still a great opportunity for conservatives. The policy analyst predicted that a stripped down version of Senate Bill 1 would be passed as part of the budget by the end of the month.

As they've spent the spring pushing for school choice legislation that includes a voucher program, advocates have tried a simple message: Legislators are either for the students or the teachers unions.
