Corbett’s budget mostly holds line on school spending
By Dan Hardy INQUIRER STAFF WRITER, Posted: Wed, Feb. 8, 2012, 1:40 AM
In contrast to dramatic cuts a year ago, Gov. Corbett's proposed $9.5 billion public school budget largely holds the line on spending - with one key exception.
Corbett once again wants to eliminate the $100 million Accountability Block Grant Program, used largely to pay for full-day kindergarten and some prekindergarten programs.

Congress members say changes to ESEA are coming

Two former school board members and current U.S. Representatives promised Federal Relations Network (FRN) Conference participants that changes are on the way for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).  Reps. Judy Biggert, R-Ill., and Glenn Thompson, R-Pa., vowed to support local control and local school boards in speeches at a luncheon session on Monday.  “I see a consensus,” said Thompson. “I have yet to find anyone on Capitol Hill who doesn’t believe [the No Child Left Behind Act] is broken and doesn’t need major changes.”

Budget: $30 million in cuts to early childhood education programs; $95 million in cuts to public schools thru elimination of ABG; Keystone Exams scaled back
