The Pequea
Valley School Board voted 7 to 2 on Thursday to approve a 2012-13 preliminary
budget that could raise taxes near 3 percent. If the preliminary budget of $30,689,347
passes as is, the millage rate would increase by 2.93 percent to 17.3332 mills.
The
proposed increase is higher than the 1.7 percent Act 1 index allowed by the
state. The board voted to apply for Act 1 exceptions for special education and
retirement costs, although several members said they hoped the exceptions would
not have to be used.

HAVERFORD
— School directors are poised to adopt a 2012-13 preliminary budget on Thursday
requiring a 2.49 percent property tax rate increase, from 26.0209 to 26.6689
mills.
In discussions last week, officials noted it’s the smallest increase in memory but the largest currently permitted under Act 1 without going to referendum. While this year’s index is 1.7 percent, the increase includes a $615,000 exception for Public School Employees’ Retirement System costs, which will jump from 8.65 percent to 12.36 percent, Business Manager Rick Henderson said in his review.

West Shore SD nixes merging sports teams, opts to cut teachers

The West Shore School Board,
facing a $3.7 million deficit next year, left Thursday's marathon board meeting
without cutting JROTC or merging the marching band or sports of its two high
schools. Instead, the gauntlet fell on
the library staff - the board is considering cutting six of 12 librarians,
although that's a decrease from the initially proposed 10.
And it fell on the foreign
language staff. An estimated eight teachers will lose their jobs if the budget
remains as is, with the high school Latin program, which has had lagging
enrollment recently, and the middle school world languages program, eliminated.
And it fell on students who
participate in extracurriculars.

But one district official said
the increase eventually passed probably will not be that high.
A very rudimentary preliminary
budget for the next school year to be presented at the Jan. 19 school board
meeting includes a property tax increase of 3.33 mills, or $127 for a resident
with property assessed at the school district average of $38,000. That’s a 3
percent property tax increase.
