THE United States supports schools in Afghanistan because we know that education is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to build a country.
Alas, we've forgotten that lesson at home. All across America, school budgets are being cut, teachers laid off and education programs dismantled.

New York City Abandons Teacher Bonus Program

A New York City program that distributed $56 million in performance bonuses to teachers and other school staff members over the last three years will be permanently discontinued, the city Department of Education said on Sunday.
The decision was made in light of a study that found the bonuses had no positive effect on either student performance or teachers' attitudes toward their jobs.

Neshaminy teachers' union calls new contract offer an 'insult'

In the latest chapter of the Neshaminy School District's contentious 31/2-year teachers' contract saga, union leaders ended Monday's negotiating session after two minutes, calling the school board's new offer an "insult."
