State expands analysis of PSSA test scores

By this fall, the state Department of Education will know whether schools flagged in 2009 for possible cheating on a standardized test show the same irregularities for 2010 and 2011.

A report analyzing irregularities among the standardized tests of nearly 1 million students arrived at the state Department of Education in July 2009 and "basically sat on a shelf," agency spokesman Tim Eller said Wednesday.

Sen. Yaw in favor of pilot program for school vouchers

In an interview on Wednesday, state Sen. Gene Yaw said he supports instituting a pilot program to try out school vouchers and also suggested instituting Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania on a pilot basis.

Earlier this week, facing questions about thousands of teacher layoffs being made by school districts in the wake of a billion dollars in state spending cuts- including $300 million in cuts to pre-K-12 education - Gov. Corbett argued he's not responsible for teachers now out of a job.
"We will not be laying off the school districts' teachers," Corbett said. The districts "have their own financial decisions they have to make."

This seems to represent the sort of money-fueled policy that education historian Diane Ravitch has been warning us about, so I asked her for her thoughts.

North Allegheny approves fees for extracurricular activities

Athletes, marching band members and hundreds of other students at North Allegheny School District must pay if they want to participate in extracurricular activities beginning in the fall.
North Allegheny School Board members on Wednesday night approved the fees by a 7-1 vote, with one member absent.
Students will pay $75 per season for interscholastic sports like football or track-and-field; $50 per year for marching band and $25 for each additional extracurricular activity like chess.
