HARRISBURG, June 13 – State Rep. James Roebuck, D-Phila., Democratic chairman of the House Education Committee, introduced a bill today (H.B. 1657) that would make several funding and accountability reforms to charter and cyber charter schools in Pennsylvania.

So here in Pennsylvania conservative groups like FreedomWorks have been turning up the heat on the issue of school vouchers.
According to the Harrisburg Patriot News last weekend, FreedomWorks, the outfit that has financed the tea party rebellion, is in effect telling state legislators here in Pennsylvania that either they get a voucher bill passed by the end of June — or they could face a primary challenge next year.

Last week's bit on school vouchers generated more response than I've seen in a while, and most of it — maybe surprisingly — was supportive.
There is, I think, a large number of people out there who have experience with our educational system and know it needs to be reformed but who also realize that the "reforms" being offered by Republicans in Harrisburg (and elsewhere across the country) are less concerned with creating equitable, effective schools for all than they are in creating top-notch schools for some.

U.S. Students Remain Poor at History, Tests Show

American students are less proficient in their nation's history than in any other subject, according to results of a nationwide test released on Tuesday, with most fourth graders unable to say why Abraham Lincoln was an important figure and few high school seniors able to identify China as the North Korean ally that fought American troops during the Korean War.
Over all, 20 percent of fourth graders, 17 percent of eighth graders and 12 percent of high school seniors demonstrated proficiency on the exam, the National Assessment of Educational Progress.
