VOUCHER BILL SB1 IS MOVING

Voucher Bill SB1 is expected to be approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday April 11th and it is anticipated that it will most likely be considered by, and pass the full Senate as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday.

An amendment is expected be offered and approved on Monday by Senate Republicans that would drop the pretense that this is a bill directed at poor students in failing schools and dramatically expand the pool of students eligible for vouchers.  (This is consistent with a national agenda for universal vouchers to replace public education – see the Indiana article below).

Call or email your State Senator Monday or Tuesday and ask them to oppose SB1.

Controversial school voucher legislation could clear the state Senate by the end of next week, according to Republican senators.  Several Senate Republicans confirmed plans to have a final vote on the bill before the end of next week. The bill has to clear the Senate Appropriations Committee before a final vote, but the committee will address the bill on Monday or Tuesday, said state Sen. Jake Corman, R-Centre, the committee chair.

Indiana GOP pushes ahead with big voucher program

Critics say money being taken away from public education

From staff and wire reports
Indiana's Republican leadership is pushing ahead with a proposal that would be the nation's broadest use of school vouchers, allowing even middle-class families to use taxpayer money to send their kids to private schools. "The goal is to make sure as many kids as possible get choice," said Robert Enlow, president of the Foundation for Educational Choice, an Indianapolis-based advocacy group pushing for school vouchers.
