Report: Full-day kindergarten improves reading
Report by state group comes as funding is threatened

At a time proposed state funding cuts have put some full-day kindergarten programs in jeopardy, a new report says that the program improves reading skills.
The report by Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children -- a child advocacy group -- compares children who were in full-day kindergarten with those in part-time kindergarten statewide. Of the state's 500 school districts, 349 have full-day kindergarten, according to the partnership.

Shaler Area school board Wednesday night voted unanimously to formally oppose the Pennsylvania Senate Bill No. 1 -- the tuition voucher program -- and encourage residents to do the same.

New Kensington-Arnold schools to furlough 17 teachers

The New Kensington-Arnold school board on Wednesday approved furloughing 17 teachers to help close a $4.7 million budget deficit for next school year's $33 million budget.
That's not quite 10 percent of approximately 200 teachers in the district.
