Pennsylvania State Education Association president encourages locals to consider one-year pay freeze

About a week after Gov. Tom Corbett called on school districts to hold the line on salaries for a year to save positions and programs, the head of the state's largest teachers union is encouraging union members to "seriously consider" answering that call.
James P. Testerman, president of the 191,000 members of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, said in a statement, "The education professionals in the Pennsylvania State Education Association have been willing to be good public partners and tackle tough issues before, and we’re willing to do it again."

State teachers union head calls for wage freeze

In a letter mailed Tuesday, the state teachers union president asked members to heed the governor's call for wage concessions.

In a sharp shift from the give-no-ground mentality that's held sway in school negotiations for years, the head of the state teachers' union is now echoing Gov. Tom Corbett's call for a one-year wage freeze.
